If you have a scheduled appointment, please make sure you arrive at the branch prior to the appointment start time. Appointment Notes:

  • Appointments are required for driving skills exams.
  • Ifmultiple members of your household (i.e. spouses or minors) need to complete transactions with the BMV, you MUST have separate appointmentsfor each individual or use walk-in service.
  • If you have anout-of-state license, an ID card, or do not have a driver's license, please type 10 zeros in the Driver's License Field in the Appointment System.

Arriving for Your Appointment

When you arrive for your appointment, please be prepared with:

  • Photo ID
  • All documents needed to complete your transaction
    If you are unsure what documents you need, please review the appropriate section of our website (i.e., Registration, Real ID, Titles, etc.)

Cancelling an Appointment

The BMV has a maximum number of appointments it can take each day. We ask that if you cannot make your appointment you take time to cancel it. You can cancel an appointment by:

  1. Logging in to the Appointment Scheduler
  2. Select 'Cancel Appointment'
  3. Enter your confirmation number and last name
  4. Follow the prompts to cancel

Branches are open by appointment and for walk-in service. We have adjusted operations to maintain safety. Please review the below requirements and important information.

Hours of Operation

  • All branches have returned to their normal operating hours. Please use the Branch Map to check local information.

Transaction Information

  • If you are visiting a branch to complete a written exam, you must arrive at the branch and begin your exam no less than one hour prior to close.
  • Only one customer will be permitted per transaction. If you require assistance to complete your transaction or are a minor, support staff or a family member may accompany you.
  • The number of customers allowed in a branch will be limited. You will be asked to wait outside if the branch is at capacity.

Ensuring Employee and Customer Safety

In line with ISDH and CDC recommendations, the BMV will do the following to ensure the safety of employees and customers:

  • Limit the number of individuals in a branch at one time to ensure appropriate spacing
  • Have supplies for employees to wash and sanitize their hands regularly
  • Have a Plexiglas barrier between employees and customers
  • Customers who are NOT fully vaccinated are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to wear masks
  • Masks are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED for all individuals during a driving skills exam

Completing Transactions

  • Are kiosks available for use?

    Yes, BMV Connect kiosks are available at various locations throughout the state. Kiosks are currently credit/debit card only.

  • How do I take care of transactions if I don't have access to the internet?

    Branches are open for walk-in service. Learn more here:https://www.in.gov/bmv/2405.htm.

Extending Driver's License & State ID Expiration

  • My driver's license expired recently and I need to fly next week. Will TSA let me through the checkpoint?

    If your driver's license or state-issued ID expired on or after March 1, 2020, and you are unable to renew at your state driver's license agency, you may still use it as acceptable identification at the checkpoint. TSA will accept expired driver's licenses or state-issued ID a year after expiration or 60 days after the duration of the emergency, whichever is longer.

  • I have an appointment with USCIS. Are they closed too?

    Beginning June 4, 2020, certain USCIS field offices and asylum offices will resume non-emergency face-to-face services to the public. Application support centers will resume services later. USCIS has enacted precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in reopened facilities:

    • Visitors may not enter a USCIS facility if they:
      • Have any symptoms of COVID-19, including cough, fever or difficulty breathing;
      • Have been in close contact with anyone known or suspected to have COVID-19 in the last 14 days; or
      • Have been individually directed to self-quarantine or self-isolate by a health care provider or public health official within the last 14 days.
    • Visitors may not enter the facility more than 15 minutes prior to their appointment (30 minutes for naturalization ceremonies).
    • Hand sanitizer will be provided for visitors at entry points.
    • Members of the public must wear facial coverings that cover both the mouth and nose when entering facilities. If they do not have one, USCIS may provide one or the visitor will be asked to reschedule their appointment.
    • There will be markings and physical barriers in the facility; visitors should pay close attention to these signs to ensure they follow social distancing guidelines.
    • Individuals may also have to answer health screening questions before entering a facility.
    • Individuals are encouraged to bring their own black or blue ink pens.

    Appointment notices will include further instructions for visiting USCIS facilities. Please note that USCIS locations are not accepting walk-in visits at this time.   • The Social Security office is closed and I can't get a replacement card or an ineligibility letter to renew my license. What can I do?

    All local Social Security offices are only conducting face-to-face transactions, by appointment only, for highly critical transactions such as someone needing a first Social Security Card. For more information about changes to their services please visit the Social Security Administration webpage on COVID updates.

Knowledge & Skills Exams

  • Are driving skills exams available?

    Yes, driving skills exams are available. Appointments are required for driving skills exams and must be scheduled a minimum of 48 hours and maximum of 3 weeks in advance. The scheduler will be updated daily. Find more information on scheduling an appointment and what to expect during your exam.

  • Are driver training schools open?

    Please check with the individual school. A list of driver training schools who have told the BMV they are closed can be found here.

Registrations

  • How do I renew my registration if I can't do it at the branch or I haven't received my renewal notice?

    Registration renewals may be completed online at mybmv.com, at a BMV Connect Kiosk or over the phone. If renewing your registration over the phone, you will need the access code provided on the registration renewal reminder notice you received in the mail.

  • My license plates have expired and my local BMV branch is closed, what should I do?

    Log in or create an online account at myBMV.com or visit a BMV Connect Kiosk.

  • I bought a new car and the dealer sent me a title application along with instructions to visit a BMV branch for registering the vehicle. Do I have other options?

    If the dealer transferred your information to the BMV, you can complete your registration online or at a BMV Connect Kiosk if it has been 60 days or less than the purchase date.

    You can now use walk-in service at a branch or make an appointment.

  • My registrations are expiring but I'm required to get an emissions test done first. Can I renew now and get my emissions test later?

    An emissions test is still required before renewal. All Clean Air Check locations are open. Visit their website for more information.

Fees

  • Will I have to pay extra if I don't renew my plates on time?

    If plates are renewed on or before the expiration date, an administrative penalty will not be collected. You may renew online, at a BMV Connect Kiosk, or visit a branch via walk-in service or a scheduled appointment.

    Another option is to renew over the phone. If renewing your registration over the phone, you will need the access code provided on the registration renewal reminder notice you received in the mail.

Titles

  • I just purchased a vehicle but I haven't transferred the title into my name. What can I do?
  • There is an error on my title. Can I come downtown to the Central Office to have this corrected quickly or do I need to mail it in?

    Walk-in services at the Indiana Government Center are limited. You should visit a branch for walk-in service, including changes or corrections to a title.

Full & Partial Service Providers

  • Are Clean Air Car Check stations open for me to get my emissions tests?

    Clean Air Stations around the state are open and have implemented limited contact testing procedures and precautions to test every vehicle as efficiently and safely as possible. Please check the Clean Air Check website before you go to ensure your nearest location is open.

  • I'm a dealer and was told to mail my work in. What are my options?

    A letter addressing your concerns may be found on the Secretary of States' website outlining steps to take. You may also visit the Dealers & PSP webpage for more information.

Branch Visits

  • What transactions can be completed at a branch right now?

    All transactions. As a reminder, you must have an appointment for a driving skills exam.

  • Is the BMV enforcing the requirement for in-person visit for every other license renewal?

    Yes, the requirement for an in-person visit for every other license renewal is still being enforced. You can complete take advantage of walk-in service or schedule an appointment. Please renew online today or lookup branch hours.

RSI

  • Will Ride Safe Indiana completions be valid beyond the 1 year expiration date or will they be extended?

    Yes, provided the RSI completion expires during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Driver's License or State ID

  • I cannot renew my driver's license or registration online at myBMV.com. Why is this happening?

    There are many reasons for being unable to renew online including but not limited to:

    • Address or Name Change
    • License or Registration has been expired for too long
    • Plate type not available for renewal online or no longer offered
    • myBMV error code when trying to add to cart

    If you are unable to renew your Driver's License online, you may walk-in to a branch or review appointment availability at this time to renew.

  • How do I renew my driver's license?

    You are currently able to visit a branch for renewal utilizing walk-in service or through a limited number of appointments.

  • I am trying to schedule an appointment but do not have an Indiana Driver's License Number (DLN) to enter on the form.

    If you have an out-of-state license, an ID card, or do not have a driver's license, please type 10 zeros in the Driver's License Field in the Appointment System.

  • How can I check on the mailing status on my driver's license or state ID?

    Customers can find this information by logging into their myBMV account or contacting the BMV Customer Contact Center at888-692-6841.

FAQs for New CLP/CDL Transactions in Branches

  • Will CDL drivers who hold a Restricted Class B CDL, or an agricultural CDL, be able to add a hazmat endorsement?

    Under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulation, a Restricted Class B CDL holder cannot apply for or obtain a hazardous materials endorsement. So no, they cannot obtain a hazmat endorsement.

  • What if someone has completed training and medical exams in another state while holding their Indiana CLP? Can they still apply for their CDL in Indiana?

    Yes, as long as all other requirements are met these individuals would qualify for a new CDL transaction.

  • How can I schedule an appointment?

  • Do these new special appointment hours impact Truck Driver Training Schools? Are they required to be open?

    Training schools are not required to open under this change. Whether to be open or not is completely at the discretion of each individual school.

  • How can I submit my MER and MEC to the BMV?

    Use one of the following options to submit the completed MER and MEC:

    1. Submit in-person to any BMV branch

    FMCSA has waived the 14 day CLP holding time to schedule a CDL skills test.

  • I need to schedule my CDL Skills exam, are they still being offered?

    The BMV utilizes 3rd party testing sites for CDL Skills examination. A list of all current operating skills sites is located on the BMV website. This information will be updated as needed should a location notify the BMV that they are suspending operation.

  • My CDL Physical is expiring and I can't get into the doctor. What do I do?

    All Indiana commercial learner's permit and commercial driver's license holders are required to maintain a valid physical on file for operation of a commercial motor vehicle.
